I think what went well for my project was the fact that I gained a lot of newfound knowledge on how to market a product/company and what's going to want to make a customer buy your product. I also improved my design skills like in Photoshop and how to have an idea turn into a virtual or physical product. I learned to use programs like Keyshot, Keynote, Survey monkey and Spyfu. Spyfu and Keyshot in particular were really interesting because in Spyfu you can look at other websites revenue, how many people visited that site monthly and so much more. Keyshot was mainly 3-D modeling and animation. I think one thing I should've done better was balance my time between multiple projects in a single work day instead of working on one task the whole day. I definitely wish I had more time because I feel like I could've produced much more work. What really stood out to me was the process to perfecting a product and how much thought actually can go into very small details.
Some advice I would give to future interns is to take the time to find an internship you're really interested in because the last thing you want is to find something at the last minute. If you don't find exactly what you want keep looking and be patient. Its also really important that you establish good relationships with your mentor and possibly other co workers. This is crucial when communicating with your mentor about something you need help with or possibly an issue you may have. Prior to internship it should be a priority to get acquainted with what type od work you'll be doing and researching who this work benefits.
In terms of college I've thought a lot about what kind of design schools are out there also different types of design majors. My mentor has offered to give me some colleges to research that offer a strong graphic/industrial design program. I've learned that industrial/graphic design have smaller, more specific majors attached to them for example; in graphic design there's web design and poster design and in industrial design there's product design, entertainment design and automotive/vehicle design.
I'm definitely thankful for my mentor and fellow employees. Even though throughout the time I was there they were constantly very busy they always gave it their all in trying to help improve my project and making sure I had a had a good experience. I'm definitely really thankful that I was able to receive this awesome opportunity. Not many teens or even well qualified adults don't get experiences like the ones I had over this past month. I've definitely learned a lot about what I possibly want to major in and possibly what kind of college I want to go to once I get older. I've gained and improved on many skills as well as a lot of new found knowledge about the tech and consumer production industry. Those things I will absolutely take with me once I get back to school and further.
Some qualities that I saw in some of the employees that I want to see in myself is a real determination and passion to their craft. They really love what they do and their very skilled at the same time. I hope to have those same qualities when I find out what I want to do in the future. Internship really motivated me to want to be able to be as skilled as my co workers and to be able to strive for success at whatever i put my mind to. As far as career goals I'm definitely thinking about doing something marketing/business related or design oriented.
For my ipol I think I will be doing memorized talk as well as showing off my marketing research presentation that I have been working on. For the most part I think I will be just practicing presenting my presentation itself and talk about the other stuff I worked on such as contributing to the social media page, doing tablet research and other design type tasks I did. A normal work da I had prioritize getting my marketing presentation done, researching popular colors and tablets on the market and up keeping the social media page. I think I made a an impact on UAG because some of my research and knowledge is going to help them grow their company by going into production with some of the new product ideas and improvements I researched.
Communication was really important throughout the creation of my project because Jay and couple of my fellow co-workers could give tasks throughout the day and give me critique on some of the designs, matrices and other project related creations. This critique really improved my work and helped me go above and beyond when it comes to making a quality final product. Sometimes communicating could be a little difficult mainly because everyone is hard at work and making sure they have their own work done for the day. That being said sometimes it was a little difficult approach people just because I didn't want to disrupt them while they were hard at work but, over time as I got better acquainted with my co-workers the less of an issue that became.
Today I also got to visit a nearby 3-D printing studio called Purple Platypus. The studio had displays of models and tools that they created with 3-D printers. Most of the the 3-D printers I had seen previously were much smaller, the printers they had there were huge! A few of my fellow co workers visited the studio because they were interested in how 3-D printing could benefit there products. All of their production is in China so it's very difficult communicating with the factory all the way on the other side of the globe. Producing the cases at a studio in the Irvine/Santa Ana area would be much more convenient and communication would be much easier. What really interested me though was how the 3-D printers were able to create models of specific peoples hearts for example and use those models to practice surgery's that in the past wouldn't of been possible. In the the next 10-20 years 3-D printing will be essential when preforming surgeries or any operations in general. So far my marketing project I feel like has kind of become my main project because it's the one I've put the most work into. Original I though the marketing project was kind of like a small research thing but it became much bigger over time. The social media project has mainly been designing posts and coming up with ideas to engage more of UAG's social presence. UAG wants to add as many tags as possible to their posts so when viewers look at those tags UAG's pictures will come up. Most work days I spend working on my presentation/research and last weekend I visited a store to observe how UAG's product is being displayed. There are a lot of good ideas my team has been coming up with that I think UAG will think about creating in the near future. Me on the train pictured to the left. I think my internship is meaningful to my education because it gives myself a taste of what it's like to be working a normal job. It's I think it's also good that I'm experiencing a paid internship at such a young age considering the fact Each day you need to prioritize what you need to get done rather then the teacher reminding you everyday of what you need to get done. This skill will be useful coming back to school because it will increase productivity during work time. The work I'm doing is meaningful outside of school because this changes I plan to make directly impact the companies sales and overall recognition. Finally in the future I hopefully am able to receive an opportunity to work for a company like UAG or perhaps create one similar on my own.
Some skills I will take from internship that I will apply to my learning are definitely my improved skills in certain computer programs such as keynote to create better a better powerpoint. Another important skill that I will apply to my learning is the ability to conduct better research whether that be a product or a subject in school. The better the research the more information I will be able to obtain. I would also like to use my new found knowledge of deign and hopefully apply that to art class next year.
