POW 1 The Broken Eggs: A farmer is taking her eggs to the market in her cart, but she has a pothole, which knocks over all the containers. Though she is unhurt, every egg is broken. She goes to her insurance agent , who asks her how many eggs she had. She says she doesn't know, but she remembers some things from various ways she tried to pack the eggs. She knows that when she put the eggs in when she put them in groups of 3, there was one egg left over. The same thing happened when she put them in groups of 4, 5 and 6. When she put them in groups of 7, she ended up with complete groups of 7 with no eggs left over.
The process of my problem was first I tried to figure out how many groups of 7 did the farmer put the eggs into. My original answer with my group members was 13, but when we kept counting up by groups of 13.We eventually got to bigger numbers and when we tried to put them in groups but eventually got 1 egg left over . When I thought we could use a multiple of 7 where there would be none left over. I chose the closest multiple 7.
I used the number 14 a multiple of 7, and when you put 7 into 14 groups it comes out to 98. So I think the farmer lost a total of 98 eggs it would also be a reasonable number considering how big someones basket needs to be. Overall this problem was very difficult and it took a lot of thinking even when collaborating with group members. My goal for this POW was to get this problem right and most of all trying the best I can even if I don't get it right. I think this problem improved my overall thinking when solving difficult math problems and thinking further. I think this gave me a good intro into into 9th grade math this year.
